Today was the day that I ventured into a small studio at http://bbc.co.uk/essex/ to be interviewed about using Social Media to find employment. And what can I say about it. Well let’s start with single words; WOW. Crikey. Nervous. Amazing. Rewarding. Fun. Enjoyable. Then lets follow that up with a slightly longer sentence; Oh my goodness, what an amazing experience, the nerves were there at the beginning, soon got into the swing of is and felt relaxed and at ease. I could so do radio for a full time job!! ha ha ha!! You get my drift here right??
I was welcomed to BBC Essex building by the smiling receptionist, and waited for @ShanaBP to the studio. The energetic @DaveMonkShow welcomed me to the studio and made me feel at ease right away! A quick chat off air, and then the introduction (this was the bit where I came over all squiffy, pulled myself together, lost all moisture in my mouth and really needed the loo, all at the same time!!)… This is the interview here, you will need to forward it approximately 1hour and 5 minutes to get to it…http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p006tf79/Mid_morning_on_BBC_Essex_16_03_2010/
I won’t go into the context of the interview, as you will have listened to it, and I know I am very lucky to have had the opportunityto do it. Remember, this has all stemed from using Social Media to try to find employment. It’s about staying positive and focused and utilising your abilities and network of friends to acheive your goals! If you are down for too long…then you’re out!!
I got a twitter message from ShanaBP a couple of hours after the show, when I was trying to source the link on iplayer, she said that it wasn’t ready beacuse (and I quote) “we’ve never had so many people watching the site so intently…” That in itself is truly amazing. The Twitterverse was watching ha ha ha…but that literally is the power of social media.
As for my job search, well I have had an interview with someone, through a contact on Twitter, am awaiting feedback from that…there has been interest from Dubai via my Linkedin profile http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/paul-weston/17/653/582 which could be fantastic. And there is also a sniff of an opportunity in Alice Springs in Oz.
Although the upheaval of going to another country, with my wife (janiceflp) and 2 boys, could be an initial strain, but worth it in the end…who knows what will happen?? It’s been an emotional roller coaster so far, but what ever the outcome I will be blogging about it!
AND I STILL NEED A BLIMMIN’ JOB!!
Hang in there Paul, good things will come to ya mate. Im so happy and proud to have helped you so far in this (epic) journey, and if anyone deserves success and a good crack at life -you certainly do.
(Dont forget to chase up that other thing we talked about too.)
I also think you are very lucky to have such a supportive wife behind you who is prepared to move or do whatever it takes to get you both back on track. Many marriages fail during serious downturns such as we have right now-somehow I doubt whether yours will be one of ‘em.
I thought you came across very well on the radio and sounded just what you are:- a genuine guy who is in a bit of a fix at the moment.
To infinity and beyond!
